  • Fundamentals in Oil Painting

    This course requires some experience painting in oils OR you must have taken my Intro to Oils class.

    This course is 4, 2 hr classes.

    In this class, you will learn how to:
    +How to select a suitable reference
    +Compose and sketch thumbnails
    +transfer your idea to canvas/panel
    +Block in values and colors
    +Understand color temperature and atmosphere

    We will be working on a landscape or a still life during this course.

    Supply List:
    +bring 2 canvases or gessoed panels of sizes 8x10 or 9x12
    +boar bristle hair brushes of sizes 2,4,6 and 8 in any tip shape-flats,brights or rounds. Bring any other size brushes you may have.
    +oil paint in these required colors: yellow ochre, alizarin crimson, dioxazine purple, cobalt blue, veridian, sap green, cadmium yellow light, cadmium red medium, and titanium white. (If you are buying new, preferred brands are Winton, Utrecht, Holbein and Williamsburg. Also bring other colors and brands you may have.)
    +a palette (I recommend the Masterson sealing glass palette if you are buying new.)
    +a small jar of refined linseed oil
    +Odorless mineral spirits/blue Dawn dish soap
    +a jam jar with lid for cleaning brushes
    +papertowels/or cotton rags
    +if you have a portable or tabletop easel, please bring it
    +a sketchbook and pencil
    +if you have any photos or other references you'd like to bring in, please do!

    This class is for those who have no experience with oils as a medium, but some experience with drawing and painting in general. This is NOT a beginner painting class.
