Step into the world behind the camera and learn how Hollywood art departments bring cinematic worlds to life.

In this hands-on intensive, students will learn how construction crews collaborate with production designers, art directors, and scenic artists — then put that knowledge to work, getting certified to use professional tools and industry-standard techniques to build flats, platforms, braced set walls, and practical openings.

By the end of the course, participants will have real-world experience translating production design into physical builds while working with the same construction methods and safety practices used on professional film and stage productions.

The focus of this class will be on building hard (not soft) stage flats, support jacks, and stage risers for a child's bedroom set, intended to serve as a thrilling "hook" scene in the upcoming Neo-western Horror/Thriller, Devil in the Trunk, produced by Six Feet Under Entertainment and directed by Evan Alderson (here in the Springs). Because the film is still in pre-production, we cannot guarantee the scene or set will appear in the final film.

We'll apply the work and skills for that scene, and invite workshop attendees to share creative ideas around some practical effects challenges we are still considering for the scene.

Taught by Cody Burleson

Cody Burleson brings several years of professional Art Department experience working on TV commercials, corporate industrials, music videos, and a few motion pictures made in the Dallas/Fort Worth metroplex. He started his career as Production Assistant (PA), then moved into the Art Department, where he worked on props, set decoration, scenic painting, and set construction. He ran his own scenic design company, Scenic Wonders, before moving on to 3D modeling and animation work. (After several years as a Software Engineer, he is returning to his original love, on a mission to help the local film community grow and thrive.)
